This pressure can result from several spinal conditions, including a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or bone spurs (El Barzouhi et al., 2013). Referred pain from the lumbar spine – Joint or muscular issues may refer pain down the leg but don’t follow the classic path of the sciatic nerve.

Facet joint irritation – Inflammation in the spinal joints may radiate pain to the buttock or thigh.

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction – Pain from the sacroiliac joint can travel down the leg and be mistaken for sciatica.

Prognosis: Will Sciatica Get Better?

The outlook for most people with sciatica is generally positive. Research shows that a large proportion of cases improve significantly within four to six weeks with conservative management, including stretching, physical therapy, and activity modification (Fairag et al., 2022).

However, the prognosis depends on the underlying cause, severity of nerve compression, and how early treatment begins. People with mild to moderate symptoms often recover fully without surgery, especially when they follow a structured treatment plan. For others, symptoms may recur or persist, particularly if spinal issues like a herniated disc or spinal stenosis remain untreated (Liu et al., 2023).

With the right support—including guidance from allied health professionals—most people recover well and can return to their usual activities, often with improved awareness of posture, movement, and spinal health.
